Charmed: Eight Magical Years
by Jenna Hathaway

Charmed had been charming its viewers for eight consecutive years from 1998 until it finally ended in May 2006. This WB Hit Series told the story of three sisters who had been destined to be the most powerful witches of all time--The Charmed Ones. Prue Halliwell (Shannen Doherty), the eldest, was blessed with the powers of Telekinesis and Astral Projection. The middle sister Piper Halliwell (Holly Marie Combs) possessed the powers of Temporal Stasis (freezing time) and Molecular Combustion (blowing up things). The youngest sister Phoebe Halliwell (Alyssa Milano) had the gift of premonition and levitation. A third power soon developed as well in the form of Empathy, which allowed her to be able to sense other people's feelings.

Battling demons on an almost daily basis wasn't an easy task. This was proven in the Season Three finale, when Prue was killed in battle. The fourth season started with her funeral, and the arrival of a long lost half-sister, Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan), who unknowingly possessed some powers of her own. The Halliwell sisters' mother had once been pregnant with her Whitelighter—a witch's protector and guide—which was a forbidden relationship. Hence why Paige's identity was never revealed until someone was required to complete the Power of Three once again. The sisters learned to adjust with their new roles; Piper was now the eldest and Phoebe became the middle sister. Paige learned about her Whitelighter side and how it gave her the powers of Telekinetic Orbing, Orbing (a form of teleportation), Glamouring (changing one's appearances), and lastly, Healing.

Finding love is also another tricky thing when you're not quite...normal. Various guys had dated the sisters and failed, some of them just couldn't accept them for who they were, some were killed, and some were demons trying to steal their hearts so they could destroy them more easily. Piper was the first to marry, as her path to finding true love was the shortest, but by far the hardest to go through. Her husband was none other than The Charmed Ones' Whitelighter. It was a long road filled with pain and sorrow, but they finally made it to the end and got the approval of the Elders, the higher beings who were also the ones all Whitelighters report to. Phoebe found love in the bringer of love himself--Cupid. As for Paige, she simply married a mortal. In the series finale, all family members were reunited, both from the past and the future, including Piper's children in their adult state. Only Prue was missing from this last episode, and that's what most fans are disappointed about; we never got closure regarding her.

This series had been going for eight years, and although many fans said that it was only the first three or four seasons which were good, they still stuck by it until the end. Charmed was one of the longest running shows led by females, and that's a pretty big achievement, if you ask me. Even with the replacement of a lead actress, it could still go on for another five years. If you like watching three beautiful heroines saving the world everyday with a magical touch, this is the show for you.
