Muffins - A Ravenclaw Tradition

The Ravenclaw common room is practically overflowing with baskets of muffins; some of which are empty because of the vast popularity of the delicious cake, which seems to be the favourite among the Ravenclaws for all occasions, spanning from birthdays to weddings, or even just as an everyday snack.

Our reporter has visited the Ravenclaw common room to try to find out what it is about the muffins that makes them so popular in this house. One of the first questions one might ask is who started this tradition and why? This information was hard to retrieve, but after looking around for quite some time, our reporter found a file in a dusty archive. This file held the answers to all the questions concerning muffins.

The person to first introduce the Ravenclaw muffin was former Head Girl Leah Samson, a student of HOL since May 2002. She would use the phrase "Oh muffin" as an interjection instead of more colourful phrases that others might use, but she didn’t stop there. Slowly she started handing out muffins randomly, and she even managed to sneak a basket into the common room.

The number of baskets in the common room grew steadily during the weeks, and the handing out of muffins greatly increased as well. Many people caught onto Leah’s example and started handing out muffins themselves; hence came the tradition of the muffin as we know today.

At first the tradition was very hard to maintain, as the house elves kept removing the baskets that were left around everywhere in the common room. However, it didn't take long for the Ravenclaws to convince the house elves to leave the baskets where they were, except for one place, of course. It took almost a year before the HOL librarian was convinced in allowing muffins into the library. It was indeed a great victory for the Ravenclaws when they were finally allowed to enjoy their favourite treat in the library. Leah Samson is now known as the "Queen of Muffins." It is a very venerable title, one she got for having introduced the concept of the muffin to Ravenclaw, and for her muffin obsession. She has even been known to say that muffins are good for your health. Most Ravenclaws would probably agree with her on that point.

The one thing the Ravenclaw students can’t seem to ever really agree on is which kind of muffin is the best. The three most argued types of muffin flavours are blueberry, chocolate, and plain. It seems we will never be able to present one muffin as the absolute Ravenclaw favourite, but as one of the students said when our reporter asked her: "It doesn’t really matter that we can't agree on which kind is best, for that just means there are always several different muffins in the common room, so you can always get whichever kind you like most at that moment and I think that is really great."

We Ravenclaws love our long-standing tradition, and though we have agreed to disagree on the best kind of muffin, we will always try to carry on the tradition we most love.
