The Sekrits to Being in Ravenclaw
Adelline Aldridge (Squib)

We all know that HOL is a great place for meeting exciting new people from different places and making incredible new friends. But what sometimes goes unnoticed is the uncanny similarity to fellow HOLers which lurks in all of us. Specifically within Ravenclaw house, there are a few distinct quirks which lie unearthed in their own conversations and actions. Before you say I’m crazy, just ask yourself: what makes us so alike? Could it be the common attraction to muffins which makes our hearts unify? Well, honestly, I don’t know the answer to this question. To get a closer look, today I will be reporting around the scenes to find some answers from the Eagles themselves.

The first topic worthy of examination would be the many phrases that are common in the lingo of members from HOL anywhere. Things like “*nods*”, and “*thwaps*”, and even “pwns” could all fit into this category. To hear things from a different perspective, I sat down with Tara Aurelium, a Ravenclaw first year, to ask about her outlook on different words used often in conversation. She seemed to have not really thought about it before (as suspected). When asked how many times a day she uses the word “phail”, Tara responded quizzically, “Veeery difficult question. I’d say at least 10-20 times a day, sometimes more.” Wow, that’s a lot! But she’s not the only one; just from observing others in IRC chatrooms, I have noticed many more others who use the same word quite often, including myself! Just ask yourself, next time you’re reading posts: where have I heard this word before? The likelihood is that you have heard at least one word per post over and over again from other members of HOL.

The second thing to look at as a prime example of likeness may be the strange obsession with muffins. I mean, sure, muffins are great, but why are they a source of high respect and constant subject for conversation throughout Ravenclaw? Their fluffy goodness puts all unsuspecting Eagles under a spell, which they are obviously more susceptible to. To help explain this natural phenomenon, I spoke with Ravenclaw first year, Alissa Kirby. “What do you think could be a way to describe what makes muffins so special that they capture the hearts and taste buds of all Eagles?” I asked her curiously. “Muffins are special to Ravenclaw because, well… they define us. They are smooshy, and yummy, and there is noooo one who doesn’t like muffins,” she replied with a dreamy, longing look on her face. After this divine statement, I looked at her curiously as drool ran from her lips and offered her a napkin to wipe it up before it got on the newly-washed common room floor. What makes muffins so tasty is still a mystery, but we do know that they deserve a place in the Ravenclaw similarity department with their countless ongoing references and jokes around the common room, along with the habit of Eagles to always give into the sweetly delicate goodness and smell of a freshly-baked basket of muffins.

Another thing that draws my eye to the Eagles are their simple mannerisms and personality habits. Now, don’t get me wrong; Ravenclaw is filled with a whole variety of different, shiny, and colorful personalities, but there are still a few elements that put them together. A good example of what I mean would be the accepted belief that Ulol is evil and Cassie is scary. Most young eagles, surely, would agree. When I asked first year Adeliene (Addie) Cromwell what she thought of Ulol’s evil intentions and if she truly believed him to be so, she answered, “Despite what some people may try to convince me, I do believe Ulol is truly evil. You are as you perceive yourself!” But the simple accepted belief about certain Eagles isn’t all. There is also a sense of random silliness which can be displayed in all sorts of Eagle-like ways. This could include anything from stating the fact that Sev is a very pretty girl into playing around with “/me” commands on IRC with your friends and thwapping them for no apparent reason, just wanting to have a good laugh. The members of Ravenclaw house have a sense of motivation and excitement whenever something new comes up, and they are not afraid to try it, always with strong will to succeed.

By taking a look at my investigations, I would say that it is safe for me to conclude that even though Ravenclaws have many of the same mannerisms, and sometimes we act similarly, we are all unique in our own ways. It is only the simple interaction and bonding with one another that makes us pick up on little characteristics which make us look as though we could be the same person, but we all know that things are hardly ever as they appear, right? With our minds set on one goal, whether it be making new friends or winning the Quidditch Cup, we have ample amounts of time to unify ourselves. When people spend as much time getting to know each other as some people have on here, it’s a bit hard to not pick up on the actions of others, use some of the same phrases, or act in the same sort of manner. All that matters is that we are having fun in the process. After all, HOL is all about fun, right?
