Song of the Lioness Quartet
Alexia Riaper

Who can resist a series of books that contains mystery, humour, magic, ancient times, a touch of romance, and a very strong heroine? Certainly not myself nor many other HOLers.

The Song of the Lioness is a quartet of books written by Tamora Pierce. The books in the series are, in order: Alanna: The First Adventure, In the Hand of the Goddess, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant. The quartet follows the life of a young girl named Alanna, who wishes to be a maiden warrior, to fight evil, and to go on great adventures. She switches places with her twin brother Thom, who wishes to be a sorcerer. Alanna disguises herself as a boy, changes her name to 'Alan,' and begins her training to become a knight at the palace in Tortall. She makes many new friends while at the palace, including Prince Jonathan, Raoul, Gary, Sir Myles, and George Cooper (the King of Thieves). Of course, Alanna also encounters many enemies including an older squire named Ralon, a powerful sorcerer Duke Roger, a Bazhir shaman, and many more.

The books will quickly entrance you into Alanna’s world; so much that instead of doing your homework you will be out buying the next book, and the next, staying up till the wee hours of the night just to find out if George Cooper will kiss Alanna, or if Prince Jonathan will ask her to marry him. You’re going to love reading and following the life of Alanna as she visits ancient runes, goes to cursed cities, undergoes the Ordeal of Knighthood, visits the Bazhir tribes in the desert, meets the Shang Dragon, and travels to the Roof of the World. Prepare to be swept away into the fantastic world of these books, wishing that you could be there with them.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. Ask Rosanna Gullveig, who within 2 weeks purchased and read the entire quartet. Go mention the name “George Cooper” to Cassandra Lobiesk and watch for her reaction. Or you can go to Leah Samson and Tarma Black and ask their opinions on the books. The Song of the Lioness quartet has a huge fan base, and we’re waiting to add your name to the list!

I give this series a 9.9/10. It lost 0.1 marks because the series ends after only 4 books.
